Winning friends how to meet new people while teaching overseas

Winning friends how to meet new people while teaching overseas We know from speaking with teachers who have been placed through Teach Away to teach overseas that many of them have been worried about being able to settle in and make friends while abroad. This is a completely normal concern: everyone wants to connect with others on some level. Having friends is an important part of daily life while abroad -- in many cases, your friends will act more like family while you’re teaching away: you’ll share holidays together, classrooms, and sometimes even apartments! Expanding your friend circle can seem like a daunting task. How difficult it is to meet new people will vary from country to country. In some countries you’ll find locals to be really warm and welcoming, and in others, you’ll have to stretch yourself a little further. But we’ve put together some helpful tips to get you started: Class meetup: try asking your students (if they’re adults, of course!) if they have a favorite local restaurant that they’d like to take an after-school field trip to together. This is a good chance to get to know your students on a more personal level and talk with some of them about things other than schoolwork. Fill your calendar with events: try local festivals, art openings, and cultural events to get exposed to more people with similar interests. Find a coffee shop haunt: or a favorite place for an after-class beer. Whatever it is, the more you show up at one spot, the more likely the shopkeepers will be to chat you up. Connect with friends’ friends: use the connections you have to make new ones you might not even know about. Write to your friends who have traveled where you’re headed and ask them to connect you with any friends that they may have made while abroad. Be a ‘yes’ man (or woman!): when you get invited to something, go, even if it doesn’t seem immediately appealing to you. Who knows who you’ll meet and what doors the invitation will open! But be safe about this -- don’t accept invites to someone’s house if you’ve just met them. Join a class: whether it’s a language class, an exercise class, or even a volunteer group that meets weekly, it’s a great way to connect with the same group of people each week and maybe make a connection with one or two individuals. Try Facebook groups: find groups in your area that cater to your specific interests or your career. It shouldn’t be hard to find TEFL groups in Hong Kong or one that connects expats living in Thailand. Try a language exchange: there are all kinds of websites (like Conversation Exchange) that help connect locals with English speakers in an effort to learn language in affordable, conversational ways. It’s also a great way to connect with locals and make new friends. Are you teaching overseas? Share with us how you’ve made some of your friends thus far!

Irvine AP Tutor 5 Ways to Improve AP Exam Score

Irvine AP Tutor 5 Ways to Improve AP Exam Score AP exams: 5 Ways to Improve Your AP Exam Score From an Irvine AP Tutor Its that time of year again when students begin to start thinking about their advanced placement exams. Most students are taking AP classes by the time theyre in their junior year but some are starting to take courses sophomore year. AP courses require a large amount of homework and many important tests throughout the academic year but nothing compared to the final exam in May. Most students become overwhelmed by that point in the year because theyre also thinking about taking the SAT or ACT and their minds are exhausted from doing so many educational tasks that have occurred earlier in the year. The best way for students to overcome stress and do well in the spring is to start early and plan ahead our private Irvine AP tutoring will help you score high on your AP exam. 1.     Identify areas to improve If students try to study every single piece of information within their textbook, theyll become overwhelmed very quickly. Instead, students are encouraged to look at their personal strengths and weaknesses in their AP courses and figure out what they need to hone in on before they start their study sessions really. Topics they already feel 100% on can be reviewed but wont require quite as much effort. One of the best ways to identify strengths and weaknesses is to work with a tutor one-on-one or make an appointment with the classroom teacher at lunch. Its often easier for another person to identify patterns and then give good advice to the student. 2.   Create an outline before studying Another great thing for students to do is create an outline before they begin their study sessions. A student can identify different topics that may appear on the exam, look at different time periods they need to study or make a list of difficult concepts. This way they can tackle their study in smaller chunks and improve self-esteem by knowing they have accomplished and entire topic. Outlines also help keep students organized and help them manage their time (READ: AP Test Without the Class?). 3.   Take a practice test Its really important for students to take a practice test before they get too far into their study session because it will help them understand the format they will need to be familiar with on the big day. Each course will have slightly different formatting, but standardized testing is uniform across all topics in some respects. Students also need to get used to the short amount of time they will have to answer questions or write an essay. If a student scores lower than a three they know they have more work to do. The sooner they find this out, the more likely they will be to improve. 4.   Refine writing skills Nearly every AP course requires excellent writing skills. Students either need to complete a free response question or write an essay of some sort. In particular, many students need to work on making their writing more concise and cutting out words that are unnecessary. This will get their point across more easily and also help cut down the amount of time it takes to complete the response. As an bonus, refining writing skills will also help students with their SAT and ACT prep. 5.   Develop a test prep strategy After students have been studying for a while, they should develop a personal test prep strategy. How many points do they wish to improve? Which colleges are they applying to (this could make a difference as to what score is acceptable)? Do they need to work on speed when it comes to reading or writing? Do they need to work on concentration? These questions are difficult for a student to answer on their own and so its always good to have the help of a tutor, study group, or classroom teacher to develop a strategy that works for the student’s individual learning needs. Ellson Education

Ellson Education Ellson Education A MESSAGE FROM US: Hi! Im John, Foreign Business Training Director with Ellson Education. Ellson was started by former educators who werent content with the Chinese public-school system and the mentalities encouraged in those classrooms. In China, its not unusual to have 50-60 kids in a classroom to one teacher, and theyresimply given information to memorize and regurgitate for tests. The kids usually have an incredibly taxing schedule, starting their days around 6 AM, continuing school till 5 PM, and then going to extracurricular activities until 8. Then they have to complete the homework theyve been assigned throughout the day. Theres usually little time for children to pursue things for their own enjoyment, or even to spend time with friends. This is why at Ellson our emphasis is kids learning askids! Our classrooms and curriculums heavily emphasize Project Based Learning (PBL), so lessons are always supplemented with songs, games, performances, and crafts. We work hard so thatour students look forward to their classes at Ellsonas a way of learning interdisciplinary English through having fun! We also emphasize critical thinking by using these activities to encourage kids to question and learn through their natural curiosity. This is the best way of ensuring that they not only gain knowledge, but retain it! Having lived and taught in China with Ellson, I understand what an enormous step this is for many educators. It can be intimidating to move across the world and live in a new place, especially if you havent learned the language yet. Thats why Im here, to be your advocateand liaison and help you make the transition to China. Free Help in English Speaking

Free Help in English SpeakingIf you are wondering why there is not much help available for free English learning to speak on the Internet, then consider this. There are very few places where one can get really good free help in the English language. It is rare to see any online webmasters who offer English learning speakers assistance. They will not bother to give out information on how to pronounce the English language. The main reason for this is that they cannot. They do not want to know because they think that it would be embarrassing for them if their names are pronounced wrongly. Even if they could learn a few words at the beginning, most of the time they would have to find a way to learn English speaking without paying anything. One of the major problems with this is that reading comprehension and speaking skills will never improve when people pay to get the help. People who could get help for free usually do not have enough motivation to continue on learning. This is why the on line webmasters of the Internet are making use of paid advertisements instead of giving help to their readers. The problem with these ads is that the readers do not even get to see the speaker's name or the webmaster's face in order to be able to realize that they are reading a well written advertisement. These ads make the reader believe that the content of the ad was written by the speaker himself or herself. This is the reason why online reading comprehension and speaking skills were never taught to the people on the Internet before the present times. However, with the advent of the Internet, online reading comprehension and speaking skills were taught to all the people on the Internet. That is why one has to visit the Internet in order to get free help in English speaking. Just imagine how different life would be if you could just get help in reading the English language from the beginning. If you do not mind reading for free, you would easily recognize some words that were mentio ned in the article. In addition, people would not worry about being criticized or not able to pronounce the words correctly, if they really wanted to learn the English language. There are no other people in the world who can speak in English without getting an aid in doing so. But even if you do not want to learn this, just get a free sign up to a website that gives you tips in how to speak and read the English language. These tips can be found in any internet site that gives free help in English speaking. Sometimes, you will find that people would have to pay for these kinds of sites. That is why it is very important to visit the Internet from time to time in order to be able to get the best English speaking help for free.

Introvert Whisperer / The Top 9 Career Tips for Introverts - Introvert Whisperer The Top 9 Career Tips for Introverts The assertive executive, the friendly outgoing salesperson, and the new hire who is a real go-getter; when you think of Career Success, these may be some images in your mind. Thats not surprising. After all, its rare to see introverts portrayed as successful career people on television or movies. Successful introverts rarely sit for television interviews either. In spite of this, there are plenty of introverts that have become notable for their career success. As an introvert, you are just as capable of moving up the ladder in your chosen field as anyone else. In fact, there are even ways to make your personality work for you. To move your career in the right direction, consider these top nine career tips for introverts. 1. Prioritize work environment You may find that your work environment has as much impact on your success as the field you choose to pursue. That cool job with the Casual environment, open floor plan, constant collaboration, and boisterous corporate Bros may seem fun at first. Just be honest with yourself. Will that really work for you? Work environment and Company culture can really impact whether you are happy on a daily basis. Know what will work for you, and choose a work environment that matches your personality. 2.  Take an aptitude test The happier you are with your career, the better able you will be to withstand any stressors that you face. You may have heard the old adage that you should do what you love. Thats not quite true. In addition to finding something that you love, its even more important to find something that youre good at. take a few reputable aptitude test and assessments to identify where your talents lie. 3.  Use self-care to prepare for high-pressure situations Theres no way to avoid all the situations that are difficult for an introvert. What you can do is prepare for these by maintaining your well-being in other ways. If you have an interview, conference call, obligatory party, or other events which are going to be stressful make an extra effort to be kind to yourself.  Get some extra sleep, get a massage, indulge in a movie by yourself, or enjoy whatever Other Self Care rituals that you have. 4.  Become an expert and source of knowledge Not everyone achieves success by being gregarious and outgoing.  You can accomplish quite a bit by becoming an expert in your field, and being a reliable source of knowledge for others. Find a useful skill and develop it to a level of mastery. But dont become a commodity, keep your skills up to date and always find new skills to develop. This will ensure that you are always a person of value to the people you work with. You can also use your expertise to develop a personal and professional brand. Both are more important than ever in developing the career you want. You can take your expertise and start a blog, write articles for industry Publications, and participate in social media cover stations that are relevant to your industry. Just remember that professionalism is extremely important. If you do create an online presence make sure anything you produce is well edited and written. You can use some following resources to help: Writing Assistance â€" Consider using a reputable writing service like WowGrade.com to help put your ideas in writing. Writing Improvement â€" The Hemingway App is great for helping you improve your writing skills. Editing And Proofreading â€" Make sure your writing is accurate and free from errors with any editing service. Adding Visuals to Your Writing â€" Try Canva to add infographics and other visuals to your blog content. 5.  Develop the skills that may not come naturally As an introvert, there may be things that aren’t comfortable for you, and which don’t come naturally. It’s still important for you to perfect these skills. It may be uncomfortable to cold call someone you don’t know, to ask a peer for a referral, or to introduce colleagues, but doing these things are usually a necessary part of any upward career path. Unfortunately, there’s no magic trick here. The only way to deal with these situations is through practice. Like Winston Churchill said, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.” 6.  Take the Special Teams approach to social situations If you’re a football fan, you know what special teams are. If not, special teams are punters, field goal kickers, punt returners, snappers, and other positions. The players in these positions aren’t out on the field for the entire game, but their appearance can be absolutely pivotal when they are present. If you work in an industry where socializing is integral, or you must attend the obligatory work parties and events, think of yourself as a special teams player.  Show up, turn on the charm, engage, greet people, smile, and then excuse yourself early. You’ll get ‘credit’ for making an appearance. You’ll also be able to cut out before things get overwhelming. 7.  Improve your public speaking skills It’s even more difficult to deal with tough situations when you don’t have the skills you need to execute things successfully. Public speaking is one activity that most introverts dread. It’s also something most people have to do, even if it’s just presenting information at a meeting. If public speaking is a struggle, take action to change that. Join a local chapter of Toastmasters, or take a public speaking or speech class. The better you are at speaking in front of people, the less uncomfortable you’ll feel in these situations. 8.  Take on roles where you can add value and be successful Your quiet nature may make it difficult to get noticed in the workplace. To counter this, you have to find other ways to highlight your talents, and show that you are a valuable contributor. Be proactive in finding ways to contribute and demonstrate your value to the organization. Offer to handle written communications, if you are a talented writer. Organize employee events. Become known for your attention to detail. These are things that will help you get noticed in the workplace. 9.  Keep track of your accomplishments You may find it difficult to recite your accomplishments and credentials, but it’s important that you do. Keep a list of important projects that you’ve worked on, certifications that you’ve earned, skills that you’ve mastered etc. When you’re asked about your qualifications, you may find that having a list you’ve committed to memory will help you avoid that ‘on the spot’ feeling. You’ll be able to express yourself with confidence, and win over your audience. Final Thoughts You don’t need to be an extrovert to be successful. However, the working world certainly can feel as if it is biased in favor of the outgoing. Try applying some of these nine tips to your career, and you may find that it’s easier to navigate your path to success. Volcanoes - How They Are Formed And How They Erupt

Volcanoes - How They Are Formed And How They Erupt Volcano is a part of scientific study and science is always interesting. Especially more so when it has to do with natural phenomena. For instance, how earthquakes happen, how are volcanoes formed, what are they made of etc. This is something curious and intriguing and a lot of fun to learn as it is something that happens in real life! So, what are volcanoes made of and why. How do they erupt is the topic of discussion here; read on to learn more. How are volcanoes formed? The earth as we all know has a lot of layers underneath and one of its layers is called the mantle. The mantle is a layer that lies between the molten iron core. It has a thin crusty surface. The mantle is essentially formed of rocks and these rocks are always in slow motion. These rocks aka the tectonic plates move to and fro. They sometimes sink into the core and then this sort of a sinking phenomenon happens. The plates become very hot so much so that the rock melts. This molten rock or the magma moves forward towards the surface of the earth. This widens the cracks and this molten material is what is known as the lava. As layers of lava build up, voila, a volcano is formed. There are many different kinds of lava flows Yes! This is true and in fact this is often the very topic that many kids take up for their science projects. Volcanoes are a fascinating phenomenon. Many kids seek the help of online science tutors to work on interesting projects related to them (for their science fairs and assignments of course!). Now, before getting back to the kinds of lava there are, we need to understand how volcanoes erupt. How do volcanoes erupt? Due to pressure build up, magma overflows. The volcano erupts into a lava flow on the surface of the earth. With layers and layers of magma piling up and pushing down due to gravity. The gasses inside push the magma up and this causes the eruption of the volcano (when the pressure build up is high enough). Pyroclastic eruptions These happen when there is dissolution of gases and water in the magma. When the gas pressure is more, the magma disintegrates into rocks, lava and this sort of an eruption is explosive in nature. Sheet Lava With up to a thickness of anywhere from 10-30 metres, this kind of lava flow is very fast and fill lower areas like a blanker or a sheet. The other kinds are Aa lava, Block lavas and Pahoehoe. Volcanoes are dormant for thousands of years together and the science behind their formation and eruption has fascinated many for years! Whether it is as part of science homework help online or science assignment help, students continue to seek information about this natural phenomenon. We hope this blog sheds some info about volcanoes and how they are formed and how they erupt. Watch this space for more such interesting blogs.
